Chlayne Fellows' Sun Conure, Calista.

Conures

Thomas Arndt's Lexicon lists the following 44 species of Conures, and some have more than one sub species. Some are very rare, some are extinct, some require a permit to keep, some are more colorful than others. They come small, medium and large in size. Most are vocal and some people find the sound unpleasant. They are flock dwellers and can survive as feral flocks in non native countries. My favorite site to support this is The wild parrots of Telegraph Hill.

Donna's Green Cheek, Chester. In the Aratinga group , the most popular is the Sun Conure in the Pyrrhura group the Green - cheeked Conure.

Each person has his or her own favorite Conure. You either love them or you hate them. Some are very colorful and some are drab, most are very personable and a many of them will talk. Their vocabulary is not as extensive as some other species but they can talk fairly well.

They come from Brazil. Boca Del Rio, Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador and northern Nicaragua. Costa Rica and western Panama, Venezuela,Complements of Hideaway Farms Aviary Peru, eastern Bolivia and northwest Argentina. The list goes on. Go below the equator and you may see a conure!

They are a hardy bird which can live 20 to 40 years. They make great pets for children and adults alike. They enjoy toys and need to have something to occupy them if they are to be a solitary household bird.

My suggestion is to purchase your Conure from a breeder who knows the species and can advise you as to the best for your family situation. Conures cannot be classified as some of the other sought after pet birds. It takes a special person to be owned by a Conure. Their need for attention runs moderate to high, so please keep this in mind...Gregarious, outgoing and playful.....they need plenty of toys and a moderately large cage.
