Our love of Lories began years ago and totally by accident - we were at a bird show looking for Gouldian Finches. Inside the door sat a lady playing with one of the cutest little birds - I asked her what he was, "he's a Lory" was her reply. I began asking a million questions and she simply said, there is a lady here who raises them. Like a shot I was off to find the lady with the Lories. That's when I saw one of the most beautiful birds I had ever seen in my life - he was a four month old Red Lory (Eos). It was love at first sight, Sunny climbed out of his cage onto my shoulder and nuzzled into my neck - thus began our love affair with Lories.

Lories are among the most beautiful of all the parrots and there are none more entertaining. I find many other parrots dull and uninteresting when matched against a Lory. Some people think of them as messy due to the fact that they eat nectar and fruit thus their poops are liquid. I find them much less messy then the seed eaters. And besides, having a Lory will help keep you healthy, you can't just cut their fruit and veggies without taking a taste.

From the larger Chalcopsittas which are 30 to 32 cm, to the medium sized Trichoglossus which are 19 to 23 cm to the smaller Charmosyna which range from 15 to 17 cm, there are so many colors, sizes, personalities, etc. to choose from. The larger Lories tend to be a bit more vocal then the smaller Lorikeets. Most have speaking abilities, but the larger Lories tend to have a larger vocabulary.

Like the potato chip commercial, you can't have just one. (Our current flock is 50+) Anyone who purchases their first Lory soon becomes addicted and has to have another. I refer to them as winged cats. They are playful, mischievous, entertaining and beautiful!

Lories aren't for everyone - they are very special, wonderful birds. Even when started out as a pet, Lories should be bred. There are not enough of these wonderful parrots in the States and in order to ensure their availability in aviculture, it is most important they are bred when mature.
