I'm an IAABC-certified Parrot Behavior Consultant with a bachelor's in Psychology and a master's in Health Education, both from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. I've been a pet bird behavior consultant since 1993, and have bred and hand-fed many species of parrots. I've done articles for "Bird Talk" and "The Pet Bird Report", mostly under my maiden name, Kim Wiggins. Most of my more recent writing has been done through the internet. I've done many presentations for bird clubs throughout the Midwest and South, and appeared on a children's television show in St. Louis, MO. My "day job" is teaching Wellness at Okaloosa-Walton College. In addition to parrots, we have many other pets: cats, dogs, ferrets, reptiles, horses, chickens, ducks and geese. My husband and I enjoy triathlons, open water and cave diving, and we both play trombone in a swing band.
My approach to parrot behavior is a holistic one--I try to get as much information as possible about the bird's background, current environment, diet, etc. because these things will affect his behavior. I don't believe in "quick fixes", but instead, favor gradual training methods, and don't condone anything that would cause stress to the parrot or his owner. Even though parrots aren't human, they tend to respond well to some of the same techniques used in raising small children. Guidance and structure are crucial, as is a kind, nurturing attitude. These things must be the foundation of the relationships between a bird and his people.
Phone consultations are $25 per hour, and in most cases an hour is a good starting point. Follow up calls and emails are encouraged, and at least one 15 minute call may be included in the consultation price. Home visits are available but are limited to the Florida panhandle area. Lectures for bird clubs are also available, and those fees are negotiable. I use Pay Pal, so you can pay by credit card or electronic check.
